Smart Meters
September 2011
REMC in Monticello installed a Smart Meter
on our home about a year and a half ago.
They told us it was a mandatory upgrade. I
asked if I could refuse. They said we had no
choice. They could not provide electricity if
we refused the upgrade.
I asked if our rates would go up. They said,
"Of course not! It will save us money not
having to come out to read the meter."

Smart Meters allow them to read our meter
from the office; eliminating the jobs of
hundreds of meter readers. Our meter reports
our usage back to REMC every hour of every
day. This took place long before I ever heard
of Smart Meters. I wish I knew then what I
know now.

If your meter now has a digital readout
rather than the old dial that moves round,
you too have a Smart Meter.
IF you are still lucky enough to have a dial
meter you have the right to place a notice on
the meter that you DO NOT want or
authorize the installation of a Smart Meter.
This is NOT mandatory! This is your private
property, for the time being.

Smart Meters wirelessly transmit energy
consumption and pricing data in REAL
TIME.
It is designed to ration your energy usage and
raise your prices during peak time.
