| Personal Conservatism Because Conservatives often have strong political views, there can be a tendency to see conservatism as a purely political ideology. However, there is also a strong personal side to conservatism - being a conservative is as much about applying conservative values to one's everyday life as it is about campaigning and voting for conservative candidates. In general, conservatives can be characterized by a strong sense of personal morality, a willingness to observe their culture's traditions and customs, and a desire to be respectable and to show due respect to other members of the community. |
| Personal Liberalism Being a liberal is promoting maximum individual freedom as well as being open minded and tolerant. new and different ideas even those that may seem strange and unacceptable to the majority. Please note that the above are the characteristics of true or classic liberals. Unfortunately, this has been distorted by those who claim to be liberals but have other agendas thus creating a new concept of liberalism which encompasses radical ideas. These are Progressives. |
| Liberalism vs Progressivism In US politics, progressive is sometimes used as a synonym for "liberal". Liberals use the term to describe themselves and their policies in contrast to "regressive" policies of their opponents. It was also meant to create a belief that conservatives were not able to think of a progressive future. Progressivism is a way of life. Liberalism is not. American progressives tend to support international economics: they advocate progressive taxation and oppose the growing influence of corporations. Progressives are in agreement on an international scale with left-liberalism in that they support organized labor and trade unions, they usually wish to introduce a living wage, and they often support the creation of a universal health care system. Socialism is advancing in America behind the "Progressive" label. You may not be as Liberal as you think you are. You just might be a Libertarian!
